Misconceptions
about music therapy
Myth:  Previous music experience is needed to participate in music therapy.

No prior experience of musical ability is required or necessary to successfully participate in music therapy.
Myth: There is one particular style of music that is more therapeutic than the rest.

All styles of music can be useful.  Client preference, treatment needs, and patient goals determine the type of music a therapist uses.
Myth: Any music activity is music therapy.

Music therapy must be administered by a qualified music therapist and must conform to AMTA's Standards of Clinical Practice and AMTA's Code of Ethics
